Otterly Privacy Notice
Last updated: 16 October 2026
Otterly is published by Mj Alvear, an individual developer in the Philippines. Questions: mjalvear44@gmail.com.
- Works without the internet. Otterly works fully without the internet. An internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) is only needed when you choose to send a report about one of Ollie’s replies; nothing else ever uses the connection. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. We never see your journal unless you choose to include an entry in a report.
- Your journal stays on your phone. Your entries, moods and feelings, notebooks and Ollie’s replies are kept in an encrypted database; small settings (like your theme and reminder time) are kept in the app’s private storage. The key stays on your device. Otterly marks the journal to be excluded from phone backups and keeps the key on this device only, so export before changing phones.
- Reports you choose to send. If one of Ollie’s replies is hurtful, wrong or confusing, you can report it from the app (Report or hide this reply → Send report). A report is sent only when you tap Send report. It contains Ollie’s reply, the reason you picked, your note if you write one, the feelings Ollie noticed, the app version, phone type (Android or iPhone) and language. Your entry is included only if you switch “Include my entry” on; it is off by default. A report has no name, account or device ID.
- Where it goes. The report travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our report service hosted on Vercel, is stored in a database run by Supabase, and the developer receives an email alert through Google (Gmail). The email alert does not contain your entry text; it includes Ollie’s reply, the reason, your note, the feelings Ollie noticed (family and labels), the app version, platform, language and whether you shared your entry. These providers act for us only to run the report service; we don’t sell or share reports with anyone else. Our service providers may store data outside the Philippines.
- IP addresses and logs. We don’t store your IP address. Our hosting providers keep standard short-lived request logs.
- How long. Reports are kept for up to 12 months, then deleted. Email mjalvear44@gmail.com to have a report deleted sooner.
- Instead of sending in the app, you can just hide the reply (nothing is sent), or, if sending fails, send the report from your own email app. Emailing sends these same details, including your entry if it’s switched on, from your email account to ours; ask us any time to delete it.
- On-device AI. Ollie’s replies come from an on-device model (based on Google’s Gemma) and a feelings classifier, both on your phone. Replies can be wrong.
- Phone permissions. Internet, used only to send a report you choose to send. Notifications for the daily reminder (with restart-after-reboot so it still arrives), a motion sensor for the tilting jar, the share sheet when you export, and the dialer when you tap a support line. No contacts, location, camera, microphone or photos.
- Delete. Me → Settings → Delete everything, or uninstalling, erases your data on the phone. Export is yours; the exported file is not encrypted. Reports you already sent are deleted on request by email, or after 12 months.
- Your rights. Under the Philippine Data Privacy Act you can access, correct and erase your data. For your journal you do this in the app (edit, export, Delete everything); for reports you sent, or any question, email us.
- Age. Otterly is for people 13 and older. If you are 13 to 17, use it with a parent or guardian aware.
- Not medical advice. Otterly is not a medical or crisis service. Crisis lines for the Philippines are in the app under Me → Talk to someone. In an emergency, call 911.
- Changes. This notice may change as Otterly grows (for example, if we add features that need the internet). We’ll post any update on this page with a new date, and tell you in the app before a change affects what leaves your phone.
